Garnet A. Alwine

Garnet Arline Black Alwine, 91, of Hanover, entered into God’s eternal care on Wednesday, September 30, 2015 at Homewood at Plum Creek following a short period of declining health.

Born on Tuesday, January 15, 1924 in Manchester, MD, she was the daughter of the late John M. and Missouri Sterner Black and the wife of nearly 62 years to the late Walter Edward Alwine, who died in 2008. She was also preceded in death by a brother, Claude Black, Sr.; and two sisters, Treva Hunt and Corrine Alwine.

Garnet retired as a head cashier from Sears in Hanover in 1986 and was a member of St. Paul’s Lutheran Church on York Street and the Harold H. Bair American Legion Post #14 Ladies Auxiliary. She was an avid “500” card player and enjoyed crossword puzzles as well as other puzzle books. She took great pleasure traveling with her husband and daughter throughout the United States. She experienced every state but Alaska from the passenger seat of their car.

Survivors include her daughter, Beverly Alwine of Harrisburg; and nieces and nephews, Donna Lutz of Pipersville, Claude Black, Jr. of Belleville, Louise Deller of York and Kenneth Black of St. Petersburg, FL.

The funeral will be held at 11 am Monday, October 5, 2015 at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church, 127 York Street, Hanover with The Rev. E. Robert Burkhart officiating. Burial will follow in Marburg Memorial Gardens. The family will receive friends at a viewing from 9:30 am to 10:45 am prior to the service at the church.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Homewood at Plum Creek Benevolence Fund, 425 Westminster Avenue, Hanover, PA 17331.
