Fred H. Shoemaker, 97, of Homewood at Plum Creek, loving husband of Mary Small Shoemaker, entered into God’s eternal kingdom on Friday, July 22, 2016.
Born on Monday, June 16, 1919 in Hanover, he was a son of the late Claude B. and Sarah Snyder Shoemaker. He was a 1937 graduate of Eichelberger High School and served with the US Navy during World War II where he was an instructor at the Naval Air Technical Training Center Radio School in Memphis, TN. He worked for many years as a purchasing agent for Hanover Wire Cloth and Gichner Mobile Systems in Dallastown. Fred was a member of Grace United Church of Christ where he served on the Consistory and many other committees during his more than 70 year membership. He was an enumerator for the Borough of Hanover for many years and served on the borough council from 1954 to 1958. He was a lifelong member of the Hanover AmVets Post #22, Hanover Elks BPOE Lodge #763, the Hanover Republican Club and the Harold H. Bair American Legion Post # 14 where he served in various positions including Post Commander in 1966. Fred also served on the board of directors for the Hanover Red Cross for 10 years where he was its chairman from 1972 to 1975. He was also a lifelong member of Minnewakaru.
Surviving, in addition to his wife of 77 years, are two sons, Herbert Shoemaker and his wife, Shoko, of Washougal, WA and Fred B. Shoemaker and his wife, Cecilia, of York; a daughter, Judith A. Foreman and her husband, William, of Hanover; a sister, Mary Anne Trite of Palmyra; ten grandchildren; and 18 great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by a brother, Harold Shoemaker.
The funeral will be held at 2pm Monday, July 25, 2016 at Homewood Chapel at Plum Creek, 425 Westminster Ave., Hanover, with The Rev. Joel B. Hummel officiating. Burial will be held privately in Rest Haven Cemetery with military honors being rendered by the Hanover Allied Honor Guard. The family will receive friends at a viewing to be held from 6 to 8 pm Sunday at Panebaker Funeral Home & Cremation Care Center, Inc., 311 Broadway, Hanover, and one hour prior to the service on Monday at Homewood Chapel.
