Ethel Bishop France, 88, of Hanover, cherished wife of the late William “Bud” France, died Friday, September 2, 2022 at her home following a lengthy illness.
Born on Clinch Mountain in Scott County, VA, she was the daughter of the late Conley and Gertrude Bishop. Ethel was employed by the Wege Pretzel Factory in Hanover and retired as the evening shift supervisor after 25 years of service. Prior to that, she was a stay at home mother raising ten children, her orphaned sister, and caring for a small farm. She was known for her strength, and resilient and kind heart.
Survivors include her children, Cathy D. Gross (Doyle) of Hanover, William R. France (the late Dorothy) of Thomasville, Anita A. Marsh (Michael) of Hanover, Henrietta C. Myers (Dale) of Longs, SC, Timothy P. France (Rita) of New Oxford, Connie Lee Murray (Donald) of York, Bonnie S. Reese, Mark A. France, both of Hanover, and Cindy P. Carter (John) of York; 16 grandchildren, many great grandchildren, and great-great grandchildren; and a sister, Kay Huffman, of Blountville, TN. In addition to her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by a son, Perry L. France.
The funeral will be held at 11AM on Thursday, September 8, 2022 at Intersection Church, 1980 Baltimore Pike, Gettysburg, with Pastor Jeremiah Herbert officiating. The family will receive friends at a viewing from 6-8PM on Wednesday at Panebaker Funeral Home & Cremation Care Center, Inc., 311 Broadway, Hanover and one half hour prior to the service at the church. Burial will be held at Marburg Memorial Gardens in Hanover.
