Emory B. Schwartz, Jr., 85, loving and devoted husband of Doris Baker Schwartz, entered into God’s eternal care, Friday, March 5, 2010 following a brief illness.
Born on January 25, 1925, he was a lifelong resident of Hanover and was a son of the late Miriam Adams Schwartz and Emory B. Schwartz, Sr. He was also preceded in death by a brother, Joseph Allen Schwartz and two sisters, Mae Hesson and Bernice Dohm.
A 1943 graduate of Eichelberger High School, he was inducted into the United States Navy and served our country during World War II aboard the USS Arkansas, which took him to Normandy and Iwo Jima. Later in his life, he enjoyed attending the reunions of the veterans that served on the Navy ships. He also maintained memberships with both the Harold H. Bair American Legion Post 14 and the VFW Post 2506.
In 1944, he married his sweetheart, Doris, and on October 4, 2009, they renewed their vows after 65 years at First United Methodist Church, where they were members.
He was employed by Keystone Seneca Wire Cloth for 40 years until his retirement in 1985. During those years, he also worked part-time for South Hanover Lanes from 1976-1983 and then later for Spring Grove Lanes from 1983-1993. He was an avid bowler and participated in many state and national tournaments. Never lacking in energy, he worked part-time for the Evening Sun from 1998-2008 and enjoyed riding his scooter until the age of 83.
In addition to his wife, he is survived by his son, Harry Schwartz and his wife, Ann, of Dover; and a daughter, Barbara Schwartz of New Oxford.
The funeral will be held 10 am Tuesday, March 9, 2010 at First United Methodist Church, 200 Frederick Street, Hanover with The Rev. Thomas H. Jacobs officiating. Burial will follow in Mount Olivet Cemetery with military graveside rites being conducted by Hanover Allied Veterans Honor Guard. The viewing will be held from 6-8 pm Monday evening at Panebaker Funeral Home, Inc., 311 Broadway in Hanover.
