Elaine Klauer

Elaine Klauer, 90, of Hanover, passed away peacefully on Saturday, September 8, 2018 at her home.

Born on Saturday, September 1, 1928 in Galesburg, IL, she was a daughter of the late Wilbur T. and Mildred L. Hughs Holloway. She was also preceded in death by her husband of 53 years, Eugene A. Klauer, who died in 2001. Elaine taught at St. Vincent Elementary School for several years and always liked meeting the adults who remembered her as their 3rd or 4th grade teacher. She went on to enjoy a 30 year career in the real estate industry, retiring as a broker/partner at Hilker, Klauer and Dubs Real Estate. She was a past president of the York-Adams Board of Realtors and volunteered for many years at the Eichelberger Performing Arts Center.

Elaine had a marvelous soprano voice and was a talented pianist, musical skills she furthered at Northwestern University. She was witty and smart, beautiful without being vain, and unwaveringly classy. An avid reader, she was a formidable opponent at Scrabble and all other word games. And, boy, could she cook. She ceded some ground in the kitchen as she aged, but never stopped baking—cakes, pies, chocolate chip cookies, assorted Christmas cookies, cupcakes. Her grace and generous nature meant she never visited or invited people in without offering something delicious from her kitchen.

Most importantly, Elaine was the loving center of her multi-generational family. She is survived by four children: Diane E. Baumgardner and her husband, James, of Hanover, Michael E. Klauer and his wife, Elizabeth Place, of Landisburg, Larry S. Klauer and his wife, Susan, of Hummelstown, and Lynne P. Klauer and her husband, Don Gilchrist, of Greensboro, NC; a brother, Ted Holloway and his wife, Dian, of Illinois; 15 grandchildren: Jason R. Menges, Jennifer L. Menges, Lisa D. Menges, Anna C. Lennox, Leah E. Baumgardner, Emily P. Sullivan, Benjamin W. Klauer, Adam T. Klauer, Grace H. Klauer, Lucas O. Klauer, Katie L. Klauer, Erin E. Klauer, Kiersten L. Klauer, Amelia K. Gilchrist, and Liam R. Gilchrist; and ten great-grandchildren: Gemma A. Menges, Andrew C. Menges, Tate T. Menges, Dimitri A. Plakas, Nicholas A. Plakas, Alex J. Plakas, Molly K. Lennox, Sophie G. Klauer, Jack S. Beers, and Harper L. Nicholson. She cherished each and every one and hosted countless dinners, birthdays, holidays, and vacations, gathering as many members of the family as she could, as often as she could.

The funeral will be held at Saturday, September 15, 2018 at the Panebaker Funeral Home, 311 Broadway, Hanover, at 1PM. Burial will follow in St. Vincent’s Cemetery. The family will receive friends beginning one hour prior to the service.

Elaine supported many charities but had a special soft spot for children and animals. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, 501 St. Jude Place, Memphis, TN 38105 or to the Humane Society of the United States, 1255 23rd Street, NW – Suite 450, Washington, DC 20037.
