Edward Earl Howser

Edward Earl Howser, Jr., loving husband of Mary (Finnerty) Howser, of Hanover, PA, a former long-time resident of Ellicott City, MD, passed away peacefully April 13th after a brief illness.

Born on January 3, 1930, in Baltimore and raised in Arbutus, MD, he was the son of the late Edward Earl and Alma Howser. A 1947 graduate of Mt. St. Joseph High School in Baltimore, he attended and graduated from Loyola College of Baltimore in 1951. Upon graduation, he was admitted to the Coast Guard Academy and was commissioned in 1953 as an Ensign. After serving his country, he became a member of the Coast Guard Reserves until his retirement as a Lieutenant Commander.

He married Mary Trudelle Finnerty in 1953. After residing in Arbutus and Catonsville, MD, they made their family home, with their four children, in Ellicott City, MD from 1968 until 2005, when they decided to officially retire and moved to Hanover, PA.

A gifted salesman, with a friendly, open nature, Ed began his sales career in the life insurance field. He then moved on to the Baltimore Brick Company and then to chemical sales with Dell Corporation and, subsequently, Share Corporation. His outstanding success was recognized through numerous awards and recognition at the highest corporate levels. As the national sales leader for many years, he was often called upon to mentor and advise the newer sales representatives.

Ed developed a love of the Eastern Shore as he traveled for business throughout the region over 35 years. His customers displayed an unusual degree of loyalty and offered their friendship, a true testament to his genuineness and integrity – his customers would not buy from others, but waited for Ed to pay them a call. After retirement, he often returned to the Shore revisiting his old territory, enjoying the area and seeking out his former customers.

Ed thoroughly enjoyed playing golf and was always eager to be on the course, no matter the weather or recent outcomes. The games provided the basis for many stories and light-hearted banter amongst family and friends. He also enjoyed trips with his family to Ocean City, MD, and the Outer Banks of North Carolina.

He was the epitome of the family man. Always available for a quick football or basketball game, or just advice, his weekends were for his family. As the grandchildren came along, he was a devoted grandfather also. He delighted in time with his grandchildren, spending hours hiking in the woods next door or watching for ‘his’ deer and birds to come by.

An avid gardener, his summer produce was always in demand with family and friends and he took great pride in his results showing up on the dinner table.

While living in Ellicott City, Ed was an active parishioner at St. Paul’s Catholic Church, serving on the Parish Council as well as a regular lector at Mass. He was a member of the Holy Name Society and Knights of Columbus. Upon relocating to Hanover, he took an active role in his new parish, St. Joseph Catholic Church, again serving as a lector and volunteering wherever needed.

In addition to his wife, Mary, he is survived by his children, Mary P. Harrison; Edward E. Howser, III; Thomas V. Howser and his wife Donna; and Michael L. Howser and his wife, Patricia; and ten grandchildren. Also surviving are his four sisters, Suzanne Judge, Barbara Davidsen, M. Elizabeth Howser and Kathleen Howser.

A time to share memories and visit with the family will be held Sunday, April 17th, from 3:00 to 5:00 p.m. with prayers being said at 5:00 pm at Panebaker Funeral Home, Inc., 311 Broadway, Hanover, PA.

On Monday, April 18th there will be another opportunity to visit from 3:00 to 5:00 p.m. and again from 7:00 to 9:00 p.m. at Slack Funeral Home, P.A. 3871 Old Columbia Pike, Ellicott City, MD. www.slackfuneralhome.com

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Tuesday, April 19th at 10:00 a.m. at St. Paul’s Catholic Church, Ellicott City, MD with Father Matt Buening serving as celebrant. Burial will follow at Crestlawn Memorial Gardens in Marriottsville, MD.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made in his memory to the Mt. St. Joseph High School Annual Fund, Mt. St. Joseph High School, 4403 Frederick Avenue, Baltimore, MD 21229.
