Dorothy A. Mummert Shaffer, 103, of Hanover, entered into God’s eternal care on Tuesday, January 10, 2023 at Homewood at Plum Creek.
Born on Tuesday, April 8, 1919 in Hanover, she was a daughter of the late Elias J. and Ethel M. Manger Mummert. She was also preceded in death by her husband of 69 years, Charles A. Shaffer, who died in 2016; two sisters, Ruthanna Gross and Esther Caputi; and three brothers, Norman L. Mummert, Harold E. Mummert and Richard Mummert. A 1937 graduate of Eichelberger High School, Dorothy was employed as a fashion manager for Montgomery Ward for five years and at Sears for 13 years. She was an active member of Trinity United Church of Christ, where she taught Sunday School for 56 years and was also a member of The Daughters of American Colonists. Active in the Hanover community, she was a past president of the AARP Chapter 1842 and did volunteer work for the American Red Cross – Hanover Chapter, Hanover Hospital, the Guthrie Memorial Library, Meals-On-Wheels, Homewood at Plum Creek and The Brethren Home Community.
Survivors include a son, Charles A. Shaffer, II and his wife, Donna, of Lewes, DE; a daughter, Barbara M. Williams and her husband, Robert, of Hanover; five grandchildren, Christopher Shaffer, Andrea Mills, Nicolas Shaffer, Jennifer McCusker and Kathy Chittum; nine great-grandchildren, Brady and Austin Shaffer, Madison and Jackson Mills, Keegan, Quinn and Kayleigh Shaffer, and Collin and Vanessa McCusker; a brother, Ronald E. Mummert and his wife, Jean; and a sister-in-law, Donnaleen Mummert.
The funeral will be held at 12:00 PM Monday, January 16, 2023 at Trinity United Church of Christ in Hanover with The Rev. Dr. Kim Blocher officiating. Burial will follow in Rest Haven Cemetery. The family will receive friends at the church one hour prior to the service.
