Donald T. VanPelt, Sr., 91, of Hanover, husband of Benedicta Pacheco VanPelt, passed away peacefully with his family by his side on Sunday, May 30, 2010 at Hanover Hospital following a brief illness.
Born on November 15, 1918 in Piedmont, WV, he was the only child of the late Lola Marie VanPelt. He served in the United States Army Air Corps during World War II and was later employed by the Revonah Spinning Mills Maintenance Department before retiring in 1983.
He was a member of the Harold H. Bair American Legion Post 14 and AARP. He was an avid collector of electric trains.
In addition to his wife of nearly 67 years, he is survived by his three sons, Donald T. VanPelt, Jr. of Hanover, Paul R. VanPelt and his wife, Dixie of South Lyon, MI, and Richard R. VanPelt and his wife, Sharon of Spring Lake, NC; two daughters, Diana M. Curry and her husband, Larry of New Oxford and Elaine J. VanPelt of Hampton, VA; eight grandchildren, Amy Honeycutt, Larry E. Curry, Jr., Dustin Curry, Paul VanPelt, Amanda VanPelt, Carey Ann Rabideau, Kelli Hurd and Thomas VanPelt; and six great-grandchildren, Emmalee, Troy, Cody, Levi, Shawn and Shane.
The funeral will be held at 11 am Thursday, June 3, 2010 at Panebaker Funeral Home, Inc., 311 Broadway, Hanover with The Rev. John S. Goff officiating. Burial will follow in Mount Olivet Cemetery with military graveside rites being conducted by the Hanover Allied Veterans Honor Guard. The viewing will be held from 6 to 8 pm Wednesday evening at the funeral home.
