Donald R. “Don” Brooks, 82, of Hanover, husband of Shirley Pittman Brooks, died Saturday, May 26, 2012 at Hanover Hospital, with his wife by his side.
Born on July 24, 1929 in Littlestown, he was one of ten children to the late Jesse L. and Helen Fahenstock Brooks. The last of his immediate family, he was preceded in death by nine brothers and sisters. A World War II veteran of the United States Army Air Corps, he had been employed by Emeco Industries for 44 years before his retirement in 1996. Following his retirement, he was employed by Giant Food Stores for 16 years before his health started to decline.
In addition to his wife of almost 65 years, he is survived by two sons, Merrill Brooks, Sr. and his wife, Linda of Hanover and Randy Brooks and his wife, Sandra of Spring Grove; two grandchildren, Merrill “Joe” Brooks, Jr. of Hanover and Heather L. Michua-Brooks and her husband, Fermin of Spring Grove; three great-grandchildren, Autumn Lynn Brooks, Blair Brooks and Alex Michua-Brooks and many nieces and nephews.
The funeral will be held at 2 pm Friday, June 1, 2012 at the Harvest Time Temple with The Rev. Fred Mummert officiating. Burial will follow in Marburg Memorial Gardens with military graveside rites being conducted by the Hanover Allied Veterans Honor Guard. The family will receive friends at a viewing from 6 to 8 pm Thursday at Panebaker Funeral Home, Inc., 311 Broadway, Hanover.
