Diana Elizabeth Weaver, 89, of Hanover, PA passed away peacefully at Homewood at Plum Creek on Saturday, September 7, 2024, entering God’s eternal care. She was the daughter of Frederick R. Weaver and Catherine Synder Weaver and preceded in death by her sister, Nedra A. Weaver. Diana is survived by her cousins, Holly Korman, Joel Weaver, and Scott and Heather Young.
She attended Eichelberger High School where she played numerous sports. After graduating in1953, she attended East Stroudsburg University majoring in Health and Physical Education. She received her Master of Science in Recreation at Utah State University, and additional course work at the University of Scranton. Diana had such a passion for East Stroudsburg University that she set up a scholarship fund, in her name, for students who needed funds.
She taught Health and Physical Education at Junior High School for Spring Grove Area School District from 1957 – 1987. Along with her regular teaching duties, she was Y-teen Advisor, Advisor of, football, basketball, wrestling cheerleaders, and Junior and Senior High School girls track and field Head Coach until 1990.
Diana was a lifetime active member of her church, St. Mark Evangelical Lutheran Church of Hanover. Diana loved the church Sewing Club. She held several positions, Former Church Council, Sunday School Teacher, Social Ministries Committee, and Chairman for the Crop Walk. Diana began her volunteering service with the Greater Hanover Red Cross in 1972 as a water safety instructor. In 1974 she became an American Red Cross Adapted Aquatics Instructor for 27 years. The program was successful because it was run as a one on one ratio; for a two week summer program. She was involved in several Health and Safety programs regarding First Aid and CPR for all ages and received several awards including the Clara Barton Honor Meritorious Volunteer of the year in 1995.
The Girl Scouts gave Diana her nickname, Dewie, her initials. She was involved with the Girl Scouts for 60 years beginning as a Brownie and belongs to the Juliette Gordon Low Society. She has shared many of her leadership skills. She attended many Girls Scout Round Up events in Colorado, Vermont, and Idaho. Later in life Diana became responsible for training and instructing the first aiders during the two-week day camp at Camp Gi-Sco-Ha. She received several awards, but the one special was the: Thanks Badge, the highest award given to a registered adult member for outstanding service. She was also honored for her long time Girl Scout volunteering with the Jefferson Award by WGAL in 2008, representing York County.
Diana was a member of the Harold H. Bair American Legion Auxiliary Unit #14 for 48 years. She held positions such as President, Vice President, and Secretary. Chairman of the Children and Youth Committee gave her a lot of satisfaction being in contact with the minds of the young, building confidence and self-esteem through the programs.
Diana was a member of the Delta Kappa Gamma Sorority Beta Delta Chapter and the Cancer Survivor Support Group, Jane Rice Founder.
A celebration of life service will begin at 7:00 pm on October 1, 2024, at St Mark Evangelical Lutheran Church, 129 Charles Street, Hanover, PA. Visitation will be from 6:00 to 7:00 pm. The burial will be private at Rest Haven Cemetery on October 2, 2024.
