A memorial service to celebrate his life will be held at 2:00PM Sunday, September 20, 2009 at Hanover Evangelical Free Church, 109 Flickinger Rd., Hanover with his pastor, The Rev. Dr. Arthur Woods, officiating. Burial is private with immediate family members.
Visitation: There is no public visitation at this time.
Clyde Edward Bortner, 86, passed away Tuesday, July 14, 2009 at Hanover Hospital. Born in Marburg PA on May 21, 1923 he was a son of the late John L. and Florence Houck Bortner. He was also preceded in death by two brothers, Leon Bortner and Ross L. Bortner.A 1940 graduate of Hanover High School, as well as a graduate of Thompson Business College, York PA, he was drafted into the US Army at age 19 years and served in the European Theatre of World War II with the 295th Engineering Battalion and served directly under the company commander at Battalion Headquarters in England, France, Germany, Holland and Belgium. Mr. Bortner was an assistant manager of the Hanover Water Company and retired from the Hanover Direct Company as the Export Manager. He was a board member of the Hanover Evangelical Free Church as well as active in Christian Endeavor. Mr. Bortner also volunteered in PTA, Little League and most recently for 20 years in local and regional nursing homes. He enjoyed traveling with family as a hobby.Survivors include his wife of 61 years, Louise Stambaugh Bortner and children Dr. Sheri Moore of Louisville KY and Fred S. Bortner and his wife Theresa of Charlotte, NC; two loving grandchildren, Scott M. Moore of Louisville KY and Beijing, China and Anna Bortner of Charlotte NC and several nieces and nephews.
