Clarence B. “Curly” Garrett, 88, beloved husband of Bettie Rock Garrett, died Saturday, September 24, 2011 at Homewood at Plum Creek in Hanover, PA from complications of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease.
Born July 6, 1923, in Anderson County, South Carolina, he was the son of the late Rev. Clarence B. Garrett Sr. and Leola Garrett and was also preceded in death by two brothers and three sisters.
He was employed at Glen L. Martin in 1942 constructing the JRM Mars Naval carrier plane. He served in the Navy as Photographer Mate on the aircraft carrier USS Lake Champlain from 1944-1945. After training with Eastman Kodak Photography school in the Navy, he was employed by Eddie Ritz of Ritz Cameras. In 1946 became a photographer for the Sun Papers for 40 years. He won numerous awards for prize winning photographs and had two pictures featured in Life Magazine. He won the Photographer of the Year award of the Baltimore Press Photographers Association in 1966.
He was a member of Chapelgate Presbyterian Church in Marriotsville, Md. for many years and then First United Methodist Church in Hanover, PA.
He loved boats, fishing, water skiing, marquetry, wood carving, building things and of course photography. He was a loving father and husband.
Surviving, in addition to his wife of 67 years, are a daughter, Darlene Thomas and husband Bill of Taneytown, MD; a son, Mark Garrett and wife Ann of Dover, Delaware; two grandchildren, Christine Tupino and her husband, Christopher and Dustin Garrett; and a great-granddaughter, who is expected to be born in December. He is also survived by a sister, Eloise Smith, of South Carolina, along with several nieces and nephews.
Following cremation, a memorial service will be held 11 am on Friday, September 30, 2011 at Homewood Chapel at Plum Creek with The Rev. Austin Chinault officiating. Military rites will be provided by the Hanover Allied Veterans Honor Guard.
