Clarence E. “Clem” Harman, 95, of New Oxford, loving husband of Anna M. Roche Harman, passed away peacefully on Wednesday, April 12, 2023 at Homewood at Plum Creek.
Born on Friday, August 5, 1927 in Adams County, he was one of 12 children of the late Roy E. and MaryBelle Hankey Harman. A 1945 graduate of New Oxford High School, he later graduated from the Coyne Electrical School in Chicago, IL and completed two years of coursework through the International Correspondence School of Engineering. Clem was a former employee of RH Sheppard and retired in 1989 as a foreman with John Z. Barton, Inc. after 35 years of service. He served in the US Army’s 24th Division in the post World War II occupation of Japan. Clem was a member of the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers Local 229 where he also served as the financial secretary, the West York VFW Post # 8951, the New Oxford Social Club, and was a life member of the York Rifleman Club. Gifted with his hands, he enjoyed carving wooden birds, landscaping, gardening, doing remodeling projects around the home and baking chocolate chip cookies. He also enjoyed reading about military history, but will be long remembered for his knack of being able to fix anything that was broken and for being a devoted family man and friend who was always willing to help others.
Surviving, in addition to his wife of 72 years, is a daughter, Lonna Ashton and her husband, Dennis, of York; two granddaughters, Dr. Jenna Ashton and her fiancé, Chad Dagenhart, of Denver, CO and Tessa Hullfish and her husband, Patrick; great-grandsons, Laughlin and Keiran Hullfish, all of Macungie, PA; two brothers, Curvin Harman of Lexington, SC and Donald Harman and his wife, Carolyn, of Hanover; a sister, Margaret Aumen of Abbottstown; and numerous nieces and nephews.
The funeral will be held at 11:00 AM Friday, April 21, 2023 at Homewood Chapel at Plum Creek, 425 Westminster Avenue in Hanover with The Rev. Jack C. Biondo officiating. A graveside service will follow at 3:00 PM at the Pines Cemetery in New Chester. The family will receive friends in Homewood Chapel one hour prior to the service.
The family asks that those attending please dress casually.
