Clair I. Wentz, 80, of Hanover, entered into eternal life on Tuesday, September 7, 2010 at Homewood at Plum Creek following a period of declining health.
Born on February 20, 1930 in Hanover, he was the son of the late Irvin G. and Mabel B.J. Hess Wentz and husband of 56 years to the late Irene G. Bair Wentz, who died in November 2003. He was also preceded in death by two brothers, Clark Wentz and and Norman Wentz and two sisters, Arlene Resh and Edna Slaybaugh.
He was employed by Hanover Foods Corporation for 46 years as a lineman and lead mechanic before retiring in 1992. At its inception in the late 1960's, he was a supporter of the Park Hills Elementary School football program. He was an avid hunter in his youth but enjoyed the sport of fishing throughout his life and attended St. Bartholomew United Church (ELCA), where he was a member for over 50 years.
A faithful blood donor, he donated over 5 gallons during his lifetime.
Survivors include two sons, Garry L. Wentz and his wife, Audrey of Newport Richey, FL and Scott G. Wentz and his wife, Michelle of Jefferson; two daughters, Sharon E. Lawrence and her husband, Anthony of Hanover and Tamara K. Smith and her husband, David of Spring Grove; thirteen grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; two brothers, Ralph Wentz of Ulysses and Melvin Wentz of York.
The funeral will be held 11 AM Saturday, September 11, 2010 at Panebaker Funeral Home, Inc., 311 Broadway, Hanover with The Rev. Steven E. Thomas and The Rev. Scott Sager officiating. Burial will follow in Marburg Memorial Gardens. The family will receive friends at a viewing from 6-8 pm Friday and one hour prior to the service at the funeral home.
In lieu of flowers, the family suggests donations may be made to St. Bartholomew United Church (ELCA), 1204 Grand Valley Road, Hanover, PA 17331 or Homewood at Plum Creek, 425 Westminster Avenue, Hanover, PA 17331. The family would also encourage giving the gift of life through a blood donation at the local Red Cross in memory of Clair.
