Major Clair Leroy George (US Army Retired), 92, of Glenville entered into God’s eternal care Friday, August 5, 2011 at Hanover Hall.
Born November 13, 1918 in Hanover, he was a son of the late John and Ruth Melhorn George. He was the husband of the late Imogene M. “Jean” George, who died in 2009, and was also preceded in death by a sister, Mae Adams; and two brothers, Dale and James George.
He enlisted in the US Army in 1937 and attained the rank of Sergeant. He later attended the Officer Candidate School and was commissioned a 2nd Lieutenant in 1942. He served with the Army in the European Theater during World War II and in the Korean War before retiring from the military in 1958. During his military career, he received a Bronze Star, Purple Heart and numerous other ribbons, medals and citations. Following his retirement, he continued to work for the US Government at the New Cumberland Army Depot and served at Cam Ron Bay, Viet Nam where he set up a US Army supply depot in 1968. Major George retired from the federal government in 1977.
A member of St. Matthew Lutheran Church, he taught the Men’s Bible Class for over 30 years and also taught a Fellowship Bible class on WHVR every Sunday morning for 20 years. He was a life member of the McSherrystown Home Association and the Hanover Elks Lodge BPOE # 763, where was a Past Exalted Ruler. He was a member and Past Commander of the Harold H. Bair American Legion Post # 14, and was a member of Hanover Amvets Post # 22, Hanover Veterans of Foreign Wars Post # 2506, and the Hanover Republican Club.
Survivors include a son, Phillip L. George and his wife, Vickie, of Hanover; four grandchildren, Kelley S. Ritter and her husband, Mike, of Camp Hill, Timothy P. George of San Diego, CA, Kristen A. Vanhaaren and her husband, Jeff, of Arlington, VA, and Matthew M. Thomas of Hanover; five great-grandchildren, Paige and Madison Ritter, Alexander and Addison Vanhaaren and Kaylyn Thomas; and two brothers, Warren and Richard George.
A private service will be held for the family with military honors being rendered by the Hanover Allied Veterans Honor Guard.
Memorial contributions may be made to a charity of the donor’s choice.
