Clair Bowers, 79, Naples, Florida, and York, Pa., died Saturday February 10th in Naples. For 34 years, he was a retail executive for S. Grumbacher and Son (Bon Ton department stores) based in York. At his retirement, in 1986, he was executive vice president of the chain and a member of the board of directors. Bowers was a U.S. Army veteran and served in World War II in the European theater. After retirement, he split time between York and Naples. He and his wife traveled extensively for pleasure. He was a generous contributor to numerous charities including Emmanuel United Church of Christ, St.Jude’s Children’s Hospital, Habitat for Humanity, the Salvation Army, the Heifer Project and St. Jude’s Children’s Hospital. He participated in numerous humanitarian expeditions to South America, Europe and Asia. He was an avid golfer, family man and a longtime member of Emmanuel United Church of Christ, Hanover where he served in various official capacities. He is survived by his wife Jeanne (Marchio) Bowers, formerly of Hanover, his daughter Andrea Geier, his son Greg Bowers and his daughter-in-law Julie Bowers of Columbia, Missouri. He deeply loved his grandchildren: Michael Bowers, Raleigh, NC; Jessica Bowers, Baltimore and Benjamin Smith, Carly Keech, Devon Geier and Kellen Geier, of York. He also has one great-grandchild, Rylan Keech. Clair Bowers also has two sisters, Jane Heavner, Lancaster and Gloria Ann Burr. Born in Littlestown on November 14, 1927, he was the son of the late Glenn and Dorothy Spangler Bowers.A memorial service to celebrate his life will be held 11:00 A.M. Friday at Emmanuel United Church of Christ, 124 Broadway, Hanover. There will be no viewing. Burial will be at the convenience of the family. Officiating at the service will be The Rev. James W. Thornton with The Rev. Kenneth S. Heasley assisting. Panebaker Funeral Home, 311 Broadway, Hanover is assisting the family with arrangements.
