Charles A. Shaffer, 92, of Hanover, beloved husband husband of Dorothy A. Mummert Shaffer, entered into God’s eternal care on Sunday, January 3, 2016 at Homewood at Plum Creek.
Born on Sunday, February 25, 1923 in Berwick Twp., he was the son of the late Charles and Emma Allewelt Shaffer. He was a 1941 graduate of Eichelberger High School and attended Penn State University. Mr. Shaffer graduated from the Roosevelt Aviation School as a Master Aircraft and Engine Mechanic and served in the US Navy as a Lieutenant (JG) and Gunnery Officer aboard the aircraft carrier, USS Franklin D. Roosevelt during World War II. He was a member of Trinity United Church of Christ where he taught Sunday school for 50 years and served as a Deacon and Church Elder for many years. He also did volunteer work for the American Red Cross Bloodmobile and Meals on Wheels.
Surviving, in addition to his wife of 69 years, is a son, Charles A. Shaffer, II and his wife, Donna, of Lewes, DE; a daughter, Barbara M. Williams and her husband, Robert, of Hanover; five grandchildren, Christopher Shaffer, Andrea Mills, Nicolas Shaffer, Jennifer McCusker and Kathy Chittum; and nine great-grandchildren, Brady and Austin Shaffer, Madison and Jackson Mills, Keegan, Quinn and Kayleigh Shaffer, and Collin and Vanessa McCusker.
The funeral will be held at 11 am Thursday, January 7, 2016 at Trinity United Church of Christ in Hanover with The Rev. Peg Grzelkowski officiating. Burial will follow in Rest Haven Cemetery. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service at the church.
