Charles H. Baughman

Charles H. Baughman, 97, of Hanover, entered into God’s eternal care on Sunday, February 9, 2014 at Hanover Hospital following a brief hospitalization.

Born on November 7, 1916 in Lineboro, MD, he was the oldest son of the late James H. and Treva Shaffer Baughman and husband of 60 years to the late Anna Baugher Baughman, who died in 2007. He was also preceded in death by a stillborn daughter; a brother, Clarence Baughman, Sr. and a sister, Catherine Palmer.

He attended Manchester High School and worked on several farms as a young man. At the age of 40, he was invited to work alongside a carpenter friend and quickly fell in love with woodworking and the artistry of carpentry. He was employed as a finishing carpenter for companies that built in the Baltimore and Washington DC areas.

A lifetime deacon of the Hanover Church of the Brethren, he was actively involved in many aspects of the church. He taught Sunday School for over 40 years and served as the Deacon Chairman, the Assistant Sunday School Superintendent and as a Church Board Member. His work ethic kept him busy outside of the home but he also found special moments at home, growing flowers and vegetables in his garden and enjoying time with his family.

Survivors include his two daughters, Betsy Hoffer and her fiancé, Joseph Carolus of York and Jane Luquette and her husband, Dennis of York Springs; four grandchildren, Laura Smith and her husband, Jeremy, Joseph Luquette, Andrea Luquette and Julie Hoffer; a great-grandson, Luke Smith; a brother, James Baughman, Jr. of New Oxford; a sister, Anna May Witter and her husband, Samuel and several nieces and nephews.

The funeral will be held at 11 am Saturday, February 15, 2014 at Hanover Church of the Brethren, 601 Wilson Avenue, Hanover with Pastor Geraldine Godfrey officiating. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service at the church. The graveside service will follow at 2 pm in Meadow Branch Cemetery, Westminster, MD.

Memorial contributions may be made to Children’s Aid Society, 343 Lincoln Way West, New Oxford, PA 17350.
