Camilla Rose (Roth) Smith, 74, of Hanover, passed away peacefully in her home Christmas morning with her family at her side. She was the wife of Ron J. Smith, Hanover, with whom she recently celebrated 55 years of marriage.
Born November 27, 1937, in McSherrystown, she was the daughter of the late James and Genevieve (Kaehler) Roth. Camilla was a housewife and member of St. Joseph Catholic Church, Hanover. She graduated from Delone Catholic High School in 1955. She was a member of the Hanover Community Singers as well as the church choir, Bereavement Committee, Prayer Shawl group, and Council of Catholic Women at St. Joseph Church. She sang with “The Roth Sisters” on WHVR radio in the late 1940s. In addition to being devoted to her husband, children and grandchildren, she enjoyed crafts, knitting, and crocheting.
Surviving, in addition to her husband, are four children, Jeffrey F. Smith and his wife, Karen of New Cumberland, Lisa R. Startzel and her husband James of Hanover, Jill E. Carbaugh and her husband Robert of Chesapeake, VA, and Amy L. Warner and her husband Jeffrey of Hanover; seven grandchildren, Katie Startzel, Jamie Smith, Sgt. Kurtis Startzel, Elliott Carbaugh, Trevor Smith, Davis Carbaugh and Victoria Warner; two brothers, Philip A. Roth of Alabama, and James P. Roth of South Carolina; and two sisters, Patricia E. Weaver of Hanover and Donna M. Topper of Connecticut. She was preceded in death by a brother, Cyril Roth; daughter Joanne E. Smith, and grandson Joseph A. Startzel.
A Mass of Christian burial to celebrate Camilla’s life will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday, December 29, 2011, at St. Joseph Catholic Church, 5125 Grandview Road, Hanover with The Very Rev. Joseph F. Gotwalt officiating. Burial will be in St. Joseph Catholic Cemetery. Friends and relatives will be received at a viewing Wednesday evening from 5 to 8 p.m. at the church with a recitation of the Rosary at 8 pm. A second viewing will be held at the church from 1 to 2 p.m. Thursday prior to the Mass.
