Bessie V. Matthews, 94, of Hanover died Friday, March 29, 2013 at Hanover Hall Nursing Center following a period of declining health.
Born on June 26, 1918 in Arcadia, MD, she was a daughter of the late Jesse A. and Florence Leaf Myers and wife of the late Julius A. “Joe” Matthews, who died in 1971. The last of her family, she was preceded in death by three sisters, Corinne Myers, Louise Schmidt and Janet Hill and a brother, Jessie B. Myers.
A graduate of Franklin High School in Reisterstown, MD, she was a charter member and Past President of the Hanover AARP #2612 at Trinity United Church of Christ. She also served as Past President of the YWCA Joan of Arc Club and a loyal member of the Golden Age Club and the 1918 Club. A committed volunteer with Helping Hand, she also served on the Board of Directors of the Community Progress Council.
She was a member of the former Lohr’s United Methodist Church, where she was active in the Sunday School class and was a member of the Eagle Fire Company Auxiliary. A proponent of public transportation, she could be seen frequently riding the Rabbit Transit buses.
She is survived by two daughters, Martha M. Staub of Glenville and Barbara C. Matthews of Reisterstown, MD; a son, Julius A. Matthews, Jr., of Glenville; two grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
The service will be private and burial will be in St. Paul’s Lutheran Church Cemetery in Arcadia, MD.
