Arlene L. (Warner) Marsh, 78, of Hanover, loving wife of William “Billy” Marsh, passed away peacefully on Saturday, August 22, 2015 at the home of her son after a lengthy battle with a brain tumor.
Born on Sunday, June 27, 1937 in Hanover, she was a daughter of the late George and Lillie Sullivan Warner. She was also preceded in death by three brothers, Bernard, Donald and Lewis Warner; and a sister-in-law, Mary Warner.
Arlene courageously fought a brain tumor with radiation and several doses of chemotherapy, yet still managed to get through every day with a smile. She will be warmly remembered as an intelligent, giving and understanding matriarch, a great listener and giver of prudent advice. Prior to her diagnosis, she stepped into the role of caregiver to her husband, Bill, an Alzheimer’s patient.
For 37 years, she was employed at The Bon Ton as a merchandise manager. A 1956 graduate of Eichelberger High School, she always looked forward to seeing her fellow alumni at class reunions. She also loved trips to Wildwood, NJ and Myrtle Beach, SC, playing bingo at the Elks Lodge and at SAVES in Hanover, and also enjoyed trying her luck in Las Vegas, Atlantic City and the Poconos. She was a longtime member of St. Paul’s Lutheran Church on York Street in Hanover. Arlene will also be remembered as being a woman ahead of her time.
In addition to her husband of 59 years, she is survived by a son, Michael W. Marsh and his wife, Anita, of Hanover; three granddaughters, Jessie Shoap, Kelly Schneider and her husband, Adam, and Joy Purkey; eight great-grandchildren, Leann, Owen, Griffin, Grayson, Noah, Blake, Parker and Lillie; a beloved sister, Larue Storm and her husband, Rodney; and sisters-in-law, Marie Warner, Shirley Marioello and her husband, Joe; a brother-in-law, David Marsh; and numerous nieces and nephews.
A funeral will be held at 11 am Wednesday, August 26, 2015 at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church, 127 York Street, Hanover with The Rev. E. Robert Burkhart officiating. Burial will be in Rest Haven Cemetery.
The family will receive friends at viewings to be held from 6 to 8 pm Tuesday at Panebaker Funeral Home, Inc., 311 Broadway, Hanover and at the church one hour prior to the service.
The Marsh family wishes to express their most sincere gratitude to the VNA Hospice nurses and caregivers. Their compassion, dedication, care and expertise enabled Mrs. Marsh to maintain her dignity and provided much needed assistance and support to the family during her difficult fight.
